Wolf Blass Red Label Chardonnay Pinot Noir Premium Cuvée NV is my Sparkling Wine of the Year under $20 because nothing else presents such balance and appeal at this price. All things considered, this would have to be the most important wine in this report. All snobbery aside, this is singly the wine I recommend more often than any other for big receptions where budget is everything. It’s a refreshingly balanced style that showcases the lemon, pear and peach flavours of young chardonnay and pinot noir to compelling effect, with a hint of honey and a shake of spice, culminating in a finish drawn out by well-defined acidity, nicely integrated dosage and surprising balance and appeal for the bottom shelf. Long the best sub-$10 sparkling on the shelves (with recent street prices as low as $6), this release secures Red Label’s position for another year.
